January has been a busy month! As the second nine weeks draws to a close, we thank you for your continued support. Our learners are continuing to impress us with their critical thinking, reading and writing skills. This entire month, we've focused on the love of reading. We've had reading challenges and many special readers – including some of the four legged variety! A special thanks to all of you who were able to join us for our annual Math/Literacy Night and the PTA Dance.
As a reminder, school will be closed Monday, January 26 and Tuesday, January 27, 2015.

The Great Kindness Challenge comes to Providence! During the week of Jan. 26 – 30, all elementary schools across Virginia Beach will be completing kindness deeds. Our goal is 50 per student! For further information, please contact Sarah Muth, School Counselor, 648.3532

SOL test update: Test results show that our students could benefit from additional practice making predictions when reading fictional texts. With this in mind, here's how you can help at home. When reading a fiction book at home with your child, have them make a prediction about what the book will be about and then follow up at the end of the book to revise the prediction if necessary. The following sentence starters can be used: What will mostly like happen? What will _______ do most like after______? If this story continued, what would most likely happen next?

Kudos to our PTA for providing the Mad Science assembly for our students. Mad Science presenter Jupiter Jen sparks imaginative learning so parents don't be surprised if your kids want to engage in science experiments at home! Many thanks also to Mrs. Berry, Mrs. Glenn and all of our Teacher Assistants for helping to manage the students during the assembly so that our teachers could have some additional planning time.

Volunteer of the Year for 2014-15: Please see attachment, print it out and submit it by Friday, February 13, 2015. You may submit the form via your child's Tuesday folder, stop by the administration office and drop it off. We will review the nominations at our February 17th PTA Board Meeting. All nominations must be received by Friday, February 13, 2015, in order to submit them to VB Council and VBCPS by Friday, February 27, 2015 for nomination to the citywide Volunteer of the Year.
